Does It Really Matter?

Today we are all stuck into materiality and still do not realize it. E.g. My husband/father/wife got me these plates from China. They are very pretty, expensive and I love them very much. But if our maid breaks one of these plates, we tend to get very upset. We will yell at her and cry about it for a long time. And if we break these ourselves, we would keep wondering how we made such a mistake.

Everyone makes mistakes and we should realize the fact that IT WAS ONLY A PLATE. Should we really be worried that the plate broke or rather be worried if someone got hurt? One plate gone is not the end of the world. It's really not worth all the stress for such silly things in life. Learn to let go of material things in life. Losing any material things should not matter or make any difference, think about it, relationships and people are more important in life.

I WAS JUST THINKING THE SAME THING MYSELF THE OTHER DAY. I DECIDED THAT INSTEAD OF BEING LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AROUND ME, COLLECTING JEWELLRY , GOLD, MONEY , OTHER PRETTY MATERIAL POSSESSIONS I SHOULD CONCENTRATE IN COLLECTION NON MATERIAL THINGS LIKE, LOVE OF THOSE AROUND ME, FRIENDSHIPS THAT MATTER, ELDERS BLESSINGS, LAUGHTERS AND SMILES PASSED AROUND ME, MEMORIES OF GOOD TIMES...... THESE THAT LAST A LIFETIME, DOESN'T TAKE UP SPACE, THERES NO FEAR OF THEFT (BECAUSE WHAT CAN'T BE SEEN CAN NEVER BE STOTEN FROM YOU)AND THESE ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT CAN GIVE CONTENTMENT IN THE LONG RUN. THESE NON MATERIAL GIFTS ARE ONES THAT REALLY MATTER!!!!

If i may just ask what if it's a non-material thing will it even be easy to let go and just forget. in my case its harder to move on because i was the one hurt and not the other way around, come to think of it will it be all worth it just to stand there and be on your way without realizing what was lost. bottom line is it was hard to forget even if you try.

Hi Karan,

your post reminded me a lot of Richard Carlson's saying "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... It's All Small Stuff".

We tend to overidentify with things and externalities, invest our life energy into the things we identify with, we get attached to what lies outside ourselves.

Thank you for the food for thought,

Jonas

I do agree with you about the importance of a person's value over the value of material, but it's really hard to make that distinction when the material is linked to a person's value.
For example if I was a person who just got a new job and have hardly anything in the bank, I would be so heart broken if my kids accidentally crash my car.
However, if I was a millionaire and I bought a ferari, and then my son crashes it, I wouldn't be too concern over the ferari because I can afford to buy ten of them. I will be more concern about my son's health because I can't buy or replace him:)

I love this post. Not caring about material things is a main philosophy of mine. I'm trying. It's nice to know that others are as well.
